Q. I’m a Royal Engineer and I completed my trade training in the early 1990s. Can I transfer my military qualifications to up-to-date civilian qualifications?
Unfortunately, it is not possible to transfer your existing military qualifications over to civilian qualifications, as the civilian qualifications gained by Royal Engineers at trade training level now are mapped to run alongside their military training.
The RE CPD Team may be able to provide you with a comparison as to what your military training could possibly be equivalent to in civilian terms. Should you wish to enquire regarding this service, please send an e-mail, with full details of your military qualifications, to enquiries@re-cpd.org.uk .
However, please be aware that there are a number of military qualifications that do not have a civilian counterpart.
Q. I’ve been in the Royal Engineers for 10 years. What civilian qualifications are availiable for me to undertake via the RE CPD Team?
Depending on your current rank and role, you may be able to complete a civilian qualification to interest of you, and claim back your course fees via the RE CPD Bursary Scheme. Details are here.
Should you be in a tutoring or instructional role, or aspiring to be in the near future, the Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) courses may be useful (or a requirement) for you to complete.
The RE CPD Senior Awards Scheme is a management award accredited by City & Guilds, which takes into account your Royal Engineers career to date and qualifications you have achieved. There is no portfolio to complete and no lectures or classes to attend. More information can be found here.
Q. I applied for my GCGI Award via the RE CPD Senior Awards Scheme last week. How long will it take for my certificate to come through, should I be successful?
Should your application be successful, please allow up to six weeks from your application date for your certificate to reach you. If you have not heard anything after six weeks, please call the RE CPD Enquiries Line on 01634 822959 / 94661 2959.
Q. Who do you offer PTLLS courses to?
Any Royal Engineers who are in a tutoring or instructional role, or who aspire to be in the near future, are eligible to complete the PTLLS course via the RE CPD Team. You will need at least one year’s service left.
If you are a civilian employee who teaches or instructs Royal Engineers, please contact the RE CPD Team on 01634 822959 / 94661 2959, for more information regarding PTLLS courses.
Q. I completed my initial trade training a few years ago, and have lost my certificate. How do I go about getting a new one?
Please contact the RE CPD Team on 01634 822959 / 94661 2959, with details of the exact course you completed and when your certificate was issued. We will then be able to contact the relevant awarding body to ascertain whether they hold a copy of your certificate. If they do, we will require a payment of around £35 (via cheque) which the awarding body charges for replacement certificates.
It is best practice to ensure that all certificates you receive, whether via the RE CPD Team or by other means, are kept in a secure place.
Q. I am organising a Study Week within my Unit. Would a member of the RE CPD Team be able to attend?
Yes. John Coulson, RE CPD Personal Development Manager, is availiable to attend your Unit or Department and is able to complete a presentation about the services that the RE CPD Team can offer all ranks of Royal Engineers.
John is based at Gibraltar Barracks, Minley and is contactable on 01252 863524 / 94261 3524.
Q. I’m based at Carver Barracks in Wimbish. Am I still able to use the facilities at the RE CPD Learning & Advice Centre in Waterbeach?
Yes, of course. All Learning & Advice Centres are open to serving Royal Engineers and their dependents, regardless of where you are based, as long as you have the means to travel.
