Construction Materials Technician

The trade of Royal Engineer Construction Materials Technician is a bespoke trade within the Corps of Royal Engineers. They are responsible for the delivery of geotechnical investigation in the design phases of civil engineering design and construction.

 

Royal Engineer Construction Materials Technicians are the geotechnical specialists for the Defence community, providing ground engineering advice and solutions, construction materials assessment and geotechnical support to military construction worldwide. Trained in intrusive ground investigation, geophysical techniques, geotechnical testing of soil, rock, aggregates, concrete and bituminous materials, road and airfield pavement assessments and contaminated land assessments.

 

Training

As with all soldiers, potential Royal Engineer Construction Materials Technicians have to complete Phase 1 and Phase 2a training totaling 23 weeks.

 

Potential Royal Engineer Construction Materials Technicians will complete a three week assessment course at 1 Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment in Chatham, Kent.

 

Upon successful completion of the assessment course, potential Royal Engineer Construction Materials Technicians will complete their 23 week class two course covering the following subjects; geology, site ground investigation, soil strength, pavement strength and concrete technology.

 

Once achieved individuals are sent to the Defence School of Transport at Leconfield to complete driving license courses including C+E (HGV and trailer).

 

After a period of time gaining experience in the Field Army (1 – 3 years) students will return to Royal School of Military Engineering, Chatham to complete a 35 week class one course covering the following subjects; geotechnical testing, ground investigation and geophysics, Chemical testing, design and evaluation of pavements, road and airfield evaluation and health and safety of ME CMTs.

 

 

Personal and Professional Development

Royal Engineer Construction Materials Technicians are awarded a Level 3 (A Level equivalent) qualification in Construction Materials Technology on completion of the Class 2 course and awarded a Level 5 Diploma in Construction Materials Technology on completion of the Class 1 course, both accredited by the Defence Awarding Organisation.

These civilian qualifications run alongside your military qualifications. On successful completion of the course, you will achieve a recognised civilian award.

 

Many awards offered to serving Royal Engineers – such as National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) – are funded by REVETT and administrated by the RE CPD Team in collaboration with the Army unit concerned.
